Here is a recipe for making your own pizzas with whole-wheat crust, tomato sauce, cheese, and your favorite toppings:

Ingredients:

  • For the dough:
    • 1 cup warm water (105 to 110°F)
    • 2 tablespoons honey
    • 2 1/4 teaspoons (7 grams) instant yeast*
    • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil, plus extra for brushing the crust
    • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
    • Cornmeal, for dusting
  • For the sauce:
    • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
    • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • For the toppings:
    • Shredded mozzarella cheese
    • Your favorite toppings, such as pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, peppers, etc.

Instructions:

  1. To make the dough, combine the warm water, honey, and yeast in a large bowl. Let stand for 5 minutes, or until the yeast is foamy.
  2. Stir in the flour, olive oil, and salt until a dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 450°F.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it in half.
  7. Roll out each half of the dough into a 12-inch circle.
  8. Place the dough circles on a lightly greased baking sheet.
  9. Spread the tomato sauce over the dough circles.
  10. Sprinkle with the Parmesan cheese, oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  11. Top with your favorite toppings.
  12. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  13. Let cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Enjoy!

Here are some additional tips for making pizza:

  • If you don't have a pizza stone, you can preheat a baking sheet in the oven while it's preheating. Then, after you've assembled the pizzas, place them on the hot baking sheet and bake as directed.
  • If you want to make your own pizza sauce, simply simmer together 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes, 1/2 onion, chopped, 2 cloves garlic, minced, and 1 teaspoon dried oregano for 15-20 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened.
  • Get creative with your toppings! There are endless possibilities, so have fun with it.
  • If you have leftovers, you can store them in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, simply pop them in the oven at 350°F for 10-15 minutes, or until heated through.
